The vascular system of a tree is the interconnected network of xylem (which transports water up) and phloem (which transports sugars down) tissues. Vascular wilts like oak wilt attack and block this transport system.

The Monterrey oak (Quercus polymorpha) is a semi-evergreen oak native to northern Mexico and adapted to Central Texas conditions. It is highly resistant to oak wilt and tolerates heat, drought, and alkaline soils well.

Mulch is a layer of organic material (typically wood chips or shredded bark) applied over a tree's root zone to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and slowly add organic matter to the soil. Proper mulch depth is 2-4 inches, never against the trunk.

Lion's tailing is an improper pruning practice that removes interior branches and leaves only the outer foliage at branch ends, leaving the tree looking like a lion's tail. It weakens branch structure and dramatically increases failure risk.

A lateral branch is a side branch that grows off a larger parent branch or trunk. Pruning back to a healthy lateral is the proper way to reduce a tree's size without leaving stubs or causing decay.

The live oak (Quercus virginiana and related species) is an evergreen oak native to the southern United States, including Central Texas. Live oaks can live 250+ years, develop massive sprawling canopies, and are highly susceptible to oak wilt disease.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a science-based, ecological approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, mechanical, and (when necessary) chemical strategies to minimize harm to people, beneficial insects, and the environment.

ISA Certified Arborist is the credential awarded by the International Society of Arboriculture to professionals who pass a comprehensive exam on tree biology, identification, diagnosis, pruning, safety, and proper care standards. Certification requires ongoing continuing education to maintain.

Hypoxylon canker is a fungal disease caused by Biscogniauxia atropunctata that opportunistically attacks stressed hardwood trees, especially oaks and pecans. Infected bark sloughs off to reveal a distinctive silver-gray or olive-colored fungal mat.

Hazard tree assessment is the systematic evaluation of a tree's likelihood of failure, the consequences of failure, and overall risk to people or property. It is typically performed by an ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) arborist.

Heartwood is the dense, often darker inner wood of a tree that no longer transports water but provides structural support. Decay in the heartwood can compromise a tree's structural integrity without obvious external symptoms.

A girdling root is a root that grows around the trunk or other major roots, eventually constricting the vascular tissue and slowly strangling the tree. Girdling roots are a leading cause of premature decline in landscape trees.

Fire blight is a bacterial disease (Erwinia amylovora) that affects apples, pears, and related ornamentals. Infected shoots blacken and curl into a characteristic shepherd's crook shape, and the bacterium can rapidly spread through the tree.

Flush cuts are pruning cuts made directly against the trunk that remove the branch collar, leaving a wound the tree cannot properly compartmentalize. Flush cuts are widely considered improper and increase decay and disease risk.

An epicormic shoot is a branch that grows from a previously dormant bud beneath the bark, often in response to stress, injury, or aggressive pruning like topping. Epicormic shoots are typically weakly attached and structurally unsound.

Drought stress is a physiological condition where a tree's water demand exceeds available soil moisture, resulting in wilting, leaf scorch, premature leaf drop, and increased vulnerability to disease and insect attack.

Dieback is the progressive death of a tree's branches, shoots, or roots starting at the tips and moving toward the trunk. It is often a symptom of drought stress, disease, root damage, or pest activity rather than a disease itself.

Deep root fertilization is the practice of injecting liquid fertilizer into the root zone of a tree, typically 6-12 inches below the surface, to deliver nutrients directly to the absorbing roots and bypass competition from turf.

Deadwood is dead, dying, or detached branches in a tree. Removing deadwood is a fundamental pruning objective that reduces hazards from falling limbs and improves overall tree health.

The codominant stem is a condition where two or more main stems of similar size compete for dominance in a tree, often forming weak attachments that are prone to splitting. Cabling or bracing may be recommended to reduce failure risk.

Crown reduction is a pruning method that reduces the height or spread of a tree by cutting back to lateral branches large enough to assume the terminal role. It is preferred over topping when size reduction is needed.

Crown raising (or crown lifting) is the removal of lower branches to provide vertical clearance for buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, or lawn equipment. It is one of the most common pruning objectives on residential trees.

Crown thinning is the selective removal of small live branches throughout the canopy to reduce density, improve light penetration, and reduce wind resistance — without changing the overall size or shape of the tree.

The cambium is the thin layer of actively dividing cells just beneath the bark that produces new wood (xylem) and inner bark (phloem) each year. Damage to the cambium ring around the trunk can kill a tree.

The canopy is the upper layer of branches, leaves, and limbs that form the crown of a tree. Canopy management includes thinning, raising, and reducing techniques used to maintain tree health, safety, and aesthetics.

The bark ridge is the raised, often slightly darker line of bark formed where a branch meets the trunk. Together with the branch collar, it defines the natural target line for a proper pruning cut.

The branch collar is the slightly swollen area at the base of a branch where it meets the trunk or parent branch. Pruning cuts made just outside the branch collar (not flush against the trunk) allow the tree to seal the wound naturally and resist disease.

The apical meristem is the growing point at the tip of a shoot or root that produces new tissue. Apical dominance is the phenomenon where the main central stem grows more strongly than its side branches, giving the tree its characteristic upward shape.

An arborist is a professional trained in the cultivation, management, and study of trees. Most reputable arborists hold an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification, which requires passing a comprehensive exam and maintaining continuing education credits.

ANSI Z133 is the U.S. national safety standard for arboricultural operations, covering personal protective equipment, climbing systems, aerial rescue, electrical hazard awareness, and chainsaw operation. It is the workplace safety benchmark for professional tree care crews.

ANSI A300 is the U.S. national consensus standard for tree care operations, covering pruning, fertilization, support systems, lightning protection, and integrated vegetation management. Published by the American National Standards Institute, it is the benchmark professional arborists use to perform safe, structurally sound tree work.
