Heartwood

Definition

Heartwood is the dense, often darker inner wood of a tree that no longer transports water but provides structural support. Decay in the heartwood can compromise a tree's structural integrity without obvious external symptoms.

In Central Texas

Heartwood decay in mature Central Texas live oaks and pecans is one of the most common reasons Tree Scouts recommends targeted removal rather than salvage.
