Live Oak The Central Texas default. Spreads 60 feet or more at maturity, so it needs real room away from the house. Long lived and drought tough once established.

Cedar Elm Handles our limestone and clay better than almost anything, and grows upright rather than spreading, which makes it a good fit for narrower yards.

Mexican White Oak Faster growing and semi evergreen. A good choice when you want usable shade sooner, near a patio or a pool.

Chinquapin Oak Comfortable in alkaline soil and a cleaner fit along a street or driveway than a wide spreading live oak.

Texas Redbud or Desert Willow Small trees at 15 to 25 feet, for courtyards, tight side yards, and anywhere there are power lines overhead.

When can I plant a tree in Central Texas?

Any month, and we plant year round. Cooler weather from October through March gives roots the easiest start, so if the timing is yours to pick, that is the simplest window. Summer planting works too, it just asks more of the watering schedule, and we set that up with you before we leave. If you want a tree in the ground now, call us and we will tell you which species will do well going in this month.

Do I need to provide the tree, or will you?

You don't need to purchase or supply the tree yourself, we handle that for you. Tree Scouts will source a healthy tree in the species and size we've discussed from our partner nurseries and bring it on planting day. You don't need to worry about a thing, we'll handle everything.

How do I care for my new tree after planting?

We will give you clear, simple instructions for watering and caring for your new tree. Generally, a newly planted tree needs deep watering a couple of times per week initially, more during hot, dry spells. The key is to keep the root zone moist but not waterlogged. We'll make sure you know how often and how much to water in the first year, along with any other tips to help the tree thrive.

Is your team insured?

Yes. We carry general liability coverage of $1M per occurrence plus $2M aggregate, and a workers comp policy with $2M employer liability for our crew. Texas doesn't require tree companies to carry workers comp, and most don't, so always ask before letting a crew on your property.

How far from the house should a tree be planted?

It comes down to the mature spread of the species, not the size of the tree at the nursery. As a rough guide, a wide spreading live oak wants 20 feet or more from a foundation, a mid size shade tree around 15, and a small ornamental can sit closer than that. We also check what is overhead and what is buried before choosing the spot, because power lines and water lines are behind most of the removals we do fifteen years after someone else planted the tree.
