Cameron Askew ISA Certified Arborist for Tree Scouts Tree Service handling stump grinding projects in Central Texas

We're proud to introduce another ISA Certified Arborist on the Tree Scouts team: Cameron Askew, ISA Certified Arborist #TX-5146A. Cameron has been part of our crew for years, and he's the person most Central Texas homeowners actually meet when their stump grinding project happens. With over seven years in the tree care industry and roots in Austin going back a lifetime, Cameron is an Austin native who knows this region's soils, species, and seasons the way only someone who grew up here can.

Two ISA Certified Arborists on Staff — Why It Matters

Most tree services in Central Texas have one ISA Certified Arborist on the team, if any. Tree Scouts now has two: Levi Williams (TX-4955A), who leads our arborist consultations and oversees treatment plans, and Cameron Askew (TX-5146A), who leads our stump grinding work. The ISA Certified Arborist credential is administered by the International Society of Arboriculture and accredited by the American National Standards Institute, meeting and exceeding ISO 17024. Earning it requires three or more years of full-time arboriculture experience, a 200-question written exam, ongoing continuing education, and adherence to a written code of ethics. Anyone can verify either credential at treesaregood.org.

For homeowners, the practical difference comes down to two things. First, every project — including stump grinding, which a lot of companies treat as a low-skill afterthought — gets handled by someone who has formal training in tree biology, root structure, and site safety. Second, having two certified arborists means we can keep that standard across more jobs without bottlenecks. You're not waiting on the one credentialed person to be available; the credentialed person is on your job.

Meet Cameron

Cameron grew up in Austin and has watched this region's tree canopy change firsthand — through the 2011 drought, the 2021 freeze, and the steady spread of oak wilt across the Hill Country. He brings over seven years of hands-on tree care experience to every project, and he leads our stump grinding service across Georgetown, Austin, Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock, and the surrounding communities.

His favorite tree is the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) — and for good reason. The bur oak is one of Central Texas' most resilient native species. According to Texas A&M Forest Service, bur oaks reach 80 feet or more, develop trunk diameters up to 5 feet, and thrive on the limestone soils that define our region as far west as Tom Green County. They're one of the most drought-resistant oaks native to North America, they tolerate the alkaline soils that frustrate other species, and they're notably resistant to oak wilt — the disease that has devastated live oak and red oak populations across the Hill Country. Bur oaks regularly live 200 to 300 years. When Cameron picks the bur oak as his favorite, he's picking the tree that exemplifies what Central Texas homeowners actually need: tough, long-lived, and built for our soils.

Why Stump Grinding Deserves a Certified Arborist

Stump grinding looks simple from the curb. A machine, a stump, a pile of mulch. The reality is more complicated, and getting it wrong creates problems that show up months or years later.

  • Underground utilities. Central Texas yards are full of irrigation lines, gas lines, electrical conduit, and fiber. A grinder in the wrong spot causes thousands of dollars in damage and, in the case of gas, real safety risk. A trained arborist knows what to look for and when to call 811 before starting.
  • Root structure. The visible stump is a fraction of what's underground. Roots from a mature live oak or pecan can extend 30+ feet from the trunk and tangle with neighboring trees, foundations, and hardscape. Knowing how deep and how wide to grind — and where to stop — protects nearby trees and structures.
  • Species-specific decay. Different species break down at different rates and host different fungi. A live oak stump left untreated can become an inoculation point for oak wilt in nearby healthy oaks. A certified arborist knows which species need extra attention to prevent disease spread.
  • Replanting decisions. Most homeowners want to plant something new where the stump used to be. The grinding depth, the volume of mulch left behind, and the soil amendments needed to support new growth all depend on the species removed and what's planned next. Bad grinding decisions today create planting problems for the next decade.
  • Hardscape and turf protection. Heavy equipment on residential lots requires careful path planning. The difference between a clean job and a damaged irrigation system, broken sprinkler heads, or torn-up sod is the operator's experience and judgment.

This is the work Cameron leads. Every stump grinding project Tree Scouts handles is overseen by an ISA Certified Arborist who understands the species, the soil, and what comes next.

What to Expect When Cameron Shows Up

If you book stump grinding with Tree Scouts, Cameron is most likely the person who walks the property with you. He'll confirm grinding depth (standard is 4–6 inches below grade for turf restoration; deeper if you plan to replant), identify any utility or root concerns, lay out the equipment path to minimize lawn impact, and give you a realistic timeline. After the job, he handles cleanup and reviews the result with you before our team leaves. He treats every job the way he'd treat one in his own neighborhood — because for many of our jobs, it actually is.

The Tree Scouts Standard

Cameron joins a credentialed roster that now includes Levi Williams (ISA Certified Arborist, Wildfire Risk Reduction Qualified, TRAQ Qualified), Erek Flynn (Owner and Expert Arborist with over a decade of experience), and the rest of our crew. We've been featured on FOX 7 Austin, cited by Martha Stewart and The Spruce as expert sources on tree care, and we hold BBB Accreditation alongside more than 400 five-star Google reviews across our Georgetown, Austin, and Leander locations.

Whether you need stump grinding, tree trimming, tree removal, oak wilt treatment, or an arborist consultation, our team brings credentialed expertise to every project.

We serve Georgetown, Austin, Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Lakeway, Liberty Hill, Hutto, Bee Cave, and the surrounding Hill Country communities. Call 512-265-0861 or book a free assessment today.
