Branch Collar

Definition

The branch collar is the slightly swollen area at the base of a branch where it meets the trunk or parent branch. Pruning cuts made just outside the branch collar (not flush against the trunk) allow the tree to seal the wound naturally and resist disease.

In Central Texas

Branch collar cuts are critical on Central Texas live oaks, where improper cuts increase oak wilt infection risk.
