Hypoxylon canker is a fungal disease caused by Biscogniauxia atropunctata that opportunistically attacks stressed hardwood trees, especially oaks and pecans. Infected bark sloughs off to reveal a distinctive silver-gray or olive-colored fungal mat.
Hypoxylon canker is one of the most common fatal stress diseases in Central Texas oaks and pecans, especially following drought years.
