The Short Answer: What Tree Removal Costs in Central Texas

Most tree removals in Central Texas land around $750 for a standard mature tree with normal access. A smaller tree in an open yard runs $375 to $575. Large or technical removals, meaning a big tree over a house, a deck, a pool or a fence where every piece has to be rigged down by rope, start nearer $1,800 and can reach $4,500 or more.

Treat those as ranges rather than a quote. Two trees of the same height can price very differently depending on what sits underneath them and whether a truck can reach the drop zone. Every Tree Scouts estimate is free, and you get the price in writing before any work starts.

Removal cost by job type

  • Small tree, open access, under about 25 feet: $375 to $575
  • Standard mature tree, normal access: around $750
  • Larger tree, over a fence, or tight access: around $1,000
  • Technical removal, rigged down in pieces over a structure: $1,800 and up
  • Stump grinding: quoted separately, and cheapest done at the same visit

What Actually Moves the Price

1. What is underneath the tree

Location is everything. A tree with room to fall comes down in a fraction of the time of the same tree over a roof, a pool or a power drop. A single large limb can weigh over 1,000 pounds, so when there is something below it, every piece gets roped and lowered instead of dropped. That is the difference between a half day and two days.

2. Tree size

Bigger trees take more time, more labor and more equipment. Height matters less than trunk diameter and canopy spread, because that is what determines how many cuts and how much material has to be hauled out.

3. Access

Can a chipper get to the tree, or is everything being carried through a side gate? Central Texas adds its own version of this. Hill Country lots in Lakeway, Bee Cave, West Lake Hills and Steiner Ranch are often steep, rocky and narrow, which is why those removals sit higher in the range than the same tree on a flat Round Rock lot.

4. Permits and HOA approval

Austin regulates Heritage Trees, and removal there can require a city permit. Many master planned communities in Georgetown, Leander and Cedar Park require architectural committee approval before a tree comes out. Neither one usually changes the crew cost much, but both change the timeline, and we handle the paperwork.

5. Your preferences

If you do not want heavy equipment on the lawn, we work around it. If you want the wood left in rounds, kept as slabs, or hauled away entirely, say so on the estimate and it gets priced accordingly.

Be Careful With a Quote That Looks Too Cheap

If a removal quote comes in far under everything else, find out why before you sign. Four questions worth asking any company:

Do you carry insurance, and can I see both certificates?

Tree removal is dangerous work. Ask for general liability and workers compensation. Texas does not require tree companies to carry workers compensation and many do not, which means an injured climber on your property can become your problem. Tree Scouts carries $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate general liability, plus workers compensation with $2M employer liability.

Is an ISA Certified Arborist involved?

Anyone can buy a chainsaw. An ISA Certified Arborist has documented experience, has passed the exam, and works to a code of ethics. On oaks it matters even more, because a cut that is not sealed immediately is how oak wilt gets in.

Can I see reviews from people nearby?

Not just a rating, but recent reviews from your area. Tree Scouts has over 500 five-star Google reviews across Georgetown, Leander and Austin.

How exactly will the tree come down?

The answer tells you a lot. Dropping limbs and driving equipment across a lawn is faster and cheaper, and you pay for it afterward in ruts, broken irrigation and a damaged fence.

Getting an Accurate Number for Your Tree

A real quote comes from someone standing under the tree. We walk the property with you, look at what is above and below, tell you honestly whether removal is even the right call, and give you a written price before anything starts. If the tree can be saved with pruning instead, we will say so.

Common Questions

What factors determine tree removal cost?

The biggest one is what sits underneath the tree, because that decides whether it can be felled or has to be rigged down piece by piece. After that: trunk diameter and canopy spread, whether a chipper can reach it, slope and ground conditions, and whether stump grinding is included. Permits and HOA approval affect the timeline more than the price.

Why do tree removal quotes vary so much?

Because two trees of the same height can be completely different jobs. One with room to fall might be a few hours, the same tree over a pool with a fence in the way can take two days and a rigging plan. A quote far below the others usually means something is missing, most often workers compensation coverage or the cleanup.

How should I evaluate a tree removal quote?

Ask what is included: the removal itself, hauling, stump grinding, and cleanup. Ask for both insurance certificates, general liability and workers compensation. Ask whether an ISA Certified Arborist has looked at the tree. Then compare like for like, because the cheapest number on the page is rarely the cheapest job once the damage is added up.
