Roof Rats and Overhanging Trees: How Austin Homeowners Cut Off the Highway

Roof rats use overhanging branches to reach your attic. Here is how far to trim trees back from your roof, and what to do if rats are already inside.

If you have heard scratching above the ceiling right after dark this fall, you are not alone. Central Texas is roof rat country, and the same mature canopy that makes Austin neighborhoods beautiful gives these climbers a private road straight to your attic.

How roof rats use your trees

Roof rats rarely travel on the ground if they can avoid it. They move through live oaks, pecans, and cedar elms, cross from tree to tree wherever canopies touch, and use any limb that reaches your roofline as an on-ramp. Fruit trees make it worse. A fig, citrus, or pecan tree near the house is both a food source and a bridge.

Once they reach the roof, they only need a gap about the size of a quarter at the eaves, soffits, roof vents, or where the roofline meets a chimney.

How far to trim branches back from your roof

Keep every limb at least 6 feet from your roof, eaves, vents, and chimney. That includes limbs hanging over the roof, not just the ones touching it, because rats will drop down from above. Roof rats can jump roughly 4 feet, so a branch sitting 3 feet off the shingles has not solved anything.

Check the tree-to-tree bridges too. If a neighbor's oak touches your oak and your oak touches your roof, the highway is still open.

Trim it the right way

Clearance pruning done badly creates new problems. Our ISA Certified Arborists follow ANSI A300 standards on every tree trimming job:

  • Reduction cuts, never topping. We cut back to a healthy lateral branch. Topping and stubbing trigger weak regrowth that heads right back toward your roof within a season or two.
  • Correct cuts at the branch collar. Flush cuts invite decay into the trunk.
  • Oak timing. Avoid pruning live oaks and red oaks from February through June, the high-risk window for oak wilt spread in Central Texas. Fall and winter are ideal, which makes right now the right time for rat-clearance trimming.
  • Power lines. Never trim near service lines yourself. We identify limbs near utility lines and coordinate with the utility when needed.

A bonus: your roof benefits too

Limbs resting on shingles scrape away granules, clog gutters, hold moisture against the roof, and become projectiles in the next storm. The same 6-foot clearance that stops rats protects the roof itself.

What if they are already inside?

Trimming cuts off the route in, but it will not remove rats that have already moved in. For that, we send homeowners to our friends at Pest Hunters.

"Trimming your trees is a crucial first step, but it won't evict the rats already living in your home. We safely trap and remove the active rodents, seal off the exterior entry points so they can't come back, and clean up the attic they leave behind." Sean Nieto, Owner, Pest Hunters

When rats are already active, we recommend coordinating both: Pest Hunters handles removal and exclusion, and Tree Scouts handles clearance pruning in the same window, so the access route and the entry points close together.

Signs you may have roof rats

  • Scratching or scurrying overhead in the evening
  • Droppings in the attic or along insulation
  • Half-eaten fruit on trees or on the ground
  • Dark rub marks along eaves and roofline entry points

Common Questions

How far should tree branches be from my roof to keep rats out?

At least 6 feet from the roof, eaves, vents, and chimney, including limbs that overhang the roof. Roof rats can jump about 4 feet, so shorter clearances leave a gap they can still cross.

When is the best time to trim trees for roof rats in Austin?

Fall and winter. Rats move indoors as temperatures drop, and it is outside the February through June oak wilt window, so live oaks can be pruned safely.

Will trimming my trees get rid of rats already in my attic?

No. Trimming removes the access route, but active rats need trapping and exclusion by a pest control professional. We recommend coordinating both so the route and the entry points close together.
