1) What Is Biological Pest Control?

Biological pest control is the use of natural predator bugs, parasites, and organic pathogens to control harmful insects and diseases — all without resorting to harsh chemical pesticides.

Instead of blasting trees with synthetic chemicals, we use nature’s own defense system: bugs that eat the bad bugs, or bacteria that kill pests in a targeted, non-toxic way.

2) Why Use Biological Pest Control?

Chemical pesticides may work in the short term, but over time they often do more harm than good.

  • Many pests build resistance to common synthetic chemicals
  • Over time, you end up needing stronger and stronger treatments, applied more often
  • Harsh sprays can also damage the surrounding ecosystem, from soil microbes to pollinators
  • Trees and plants are biologically designed to interact with natural enemies of pests

Biological pest control uses smarter science. It protects your trees while supporting a healthy, balanced landscape. Want to go deeper into soil health? Read our post on fungal root rot prevention.

3) Examples of Pathogens Used in Tree Pest Control

Here’s one of the most effective organic pathogen treatments we use:

Bacillus thuringiensis (BT)

  • A naturally occurring bacterial treatment
  • Targets caterpillars specifically (like bagworms or webworms)
  • Applied to foliage
  • Paralyzes the caterpillar’s digestive system when consumed
  • Won’t harm birds, pets, or beneficial insects

Learn more about BT from the EPA.

4) Examples of Beneficial Insects & Predators

Not all bugs are bad. In fact, some are your best defense against the real pests. Here are a few natural heroes we can deploy:

🐝 Aphidius colemani

  • A tiny parasitic wasp that targets aphids
  • Lays its larva inside the aphid
  • The larva eventually mummifies the aphid from the inside out
  • It sounds gnarly — but it’s highly effective, and totally natural

🐞 Ladybugs

  • Actively hunt mites, aphids, and other soft-bodied pests
  • Non-destructive, safe for all other plants and animals
  • Great for early spring or summer outbreaks

🦗 Praying Mantises

  • Hunt a wide range of pests, large and small
  • Help keep things in balance over time

🌱 Beneficial Nematodes

  • Microscopic organisms added to the soil
  • Target underground pests like grubs and root weevils
  • Help protect root systems without damaging the soil biology
